I received quite a few emails over the past week asking if betalains have a chelating effect. The current published clinical study we have on the Prolain in Evolv Limitless has demonstrated a favorable effect on the inflammatory markers along with perceived levels of energy and well being, however, I often get asked questions on other health benefits of betalains. Although we haven’t studied the chelating effects of Limitless, I was provided with further information from John Hunter, GM at FutureCeuticals®, Evolv’s product development partner on the potential chelating effects of betalains.
Before I get into the research, let me share a little more on chelation. The word chelation is derived from the Greek word ‘chele’, meaning CLAW. The chemical definition is: One substance grabs hold of another substance. The “grabbing substance” is called the “chelating substance.” The substance being grabbed is called the “chelated substance.” More technically, the word chelation means: To firmly bind a metal ion with an organic molecule to form a ring structure. The resulting ring structure protects the metal ion from entering into unwanted chemical reactions. Chelation is actually a very natural process, basic to life itself. Chelation is one mechanism by which such common substances as aspirin, antibiotics, vitamins, minerals and trace elements work in the body. Hemoglobin, the red pigment in blood which carries oxygen, is a chelate of iron.
Why is there interest in if betalains have a chelating effect and how does this benefit you? In today’s environment we are exposed to a far greater number of toxic compounds than ever before and eliminating toxins from our body is essential for good health. Using chelation is a method for purging toxic metals and minerals from the body.
Although this is very technical information, here is what world leading expert in betalain research Dr. Boris Nemzer shared about the potential chelating effects of betalains.
“One of the most interesting biochemical properties of betalains is the ability to chelate bivalent and trivalent cations due to their quinol and carbonyl functions (Ernest et al., 1994). ( Translation – heavy metals such as lead, mercury are bivalent and There are several “chelating effects” reported on betalains at present:
1. Antimicrobial, antiparasitosis and antidermatosis: betalains act as antibacterial and antiviral by virus and bacteria metalloenzymes metal deprivation (by chelation)
2. Against malaria, pains and fever: antimalarial activity might be due by betalains themselves or by their degradation by-products. Betalain contain orthdiphenol and carboxyoxamine functions by which it can chelate the parasite indispensable inner cations (Ca2+, Fe2+, and Mg2+) (Kyle et al., 1990). Betalains metal chelating activity explains why in metal induced stresses the pigment synthesis increased (Ernest et al 1884)An iron-carboxylate bond links the haem units of malaria pigments (hemozoin) (Taramelli et al. 1999). Betalains by its Ca2+ chelation capacity has fibrinolytic activity as salicylic acid. Haem inhibition (known as algesic substance for human) can explain betalain activity against pains and fever.
3. Against excretion function pathologies. Hepathotoxigenic metal cations chelation by betalain might be one explanation. Ca2+ cations chelation can completely inhibit urate, oxalate and phosphatic insoluble salts formation (Nacoulma, 1996)”
In summary, to answer the questions, “Do betalains have a chelating effect?”, well, according to the research, it is quite probable. The impact of betalains is far reaching even if immediate symptomatic relief is not achieved betalains have significant health benefits.. “Around 2002 I entered a 12 week health challenge to get in the best shape of my life in my thirties. In short, I reduced my body fat to 7%.
